Steven "Steve" Scott Mehlberg age 69, of Gillette WY passed away on Sunday, May 25, 2025 at Campbell County Health. A Celebration of Steve's life will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 30, 2025 at Gillette Memorial Chapel with Brian Spaur as celebrant. Burial will follow in the Gillette-Mt. Pisgah Cemetery. Steven Scott Mehlberg, born on March 29, 1956, to Wilbur and Irene Mehlberg, in Rapid City, South Dakota, while the family was living in Newcastle, WY. He joined the family having two older sisters and one younger sister. He was baptized in Newcastle Lutheran Church at an early age. He attended grade school in Newcastle, then the family moved to Medford, OR; they lived there for five years. Then they moved to Fairbanks, AK. Steve attended Austin E. Lathrop High School in Fairbanks. The family moved to Casper, WY in 1973. On June 10, 1976, Steve married Cynthia Ann Siegel in Casper. He and his young family moved to Wright, WY, in 1982, where he began a 40-year career in the mineral extraction industry of Campbell County. He started at Black Thunder Mine as a diesel mechanic and through the years, became a maintenance manager at various properties. Their union was a testament to enduring love, as they supported each other through life's joys and challenges. Together, they raised three remarkable daughters, Stacy Apodaca, Nicky Flores, and Trisha Kleiboeker, who became some of his proudest accomplishments. His love extended further with five grandchildren: Tallie, Keegan, Jeremy, Eli, and John; and four great-grandchildren: Greenlei, Locklyn, Brixton, and Silvertin. They filled his life with joy and laughter. Steve embraced life fully, finding pleasure in restoring his dad’s 68 GMC classic truck and embracing the great outdoors. His love for camping in the stunning Big Horn Mountains and the Black Hills of South Dakota allowed him to connect deeply with nature, creating beautiful memories that will live on in the hearts of his family. He fostered connections that would last a lifetime, and his loyal spirit touched many lives. He is survived by his loving wife, Cynthia; his daughters, Stacy (Phil) Apodaca, Nicky (Arnie) Flores, and Trisha (Joe) Kleiboeker and his treasured grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will carry forward his legacy of love and family. He is also survived by his sisters, Caron Zerbst and Darla Ives (Charlie). Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Irene Mehlberg; his sister, Colleen Mehlberg; as well as his mother-in-law, Lorene Siegel, father-in-law, Ted Siegel; brother-in-law, Randy Siegel; nephew Tom Martinez; Mike Ruiz, Tallie and Keegan’s dad; sister-in-law, Lana Siegel; nephew, Curtis Siver; and brother-in-law, Bob Zerbst. Each of them played a significant role in his life story, leaving a void that will forever be felt. As we remember Steve, we celebrate a life marked by hard work, deep love, and cherished memories. His spirit will continue to inspire and guide those he leaves behind, becoming a foundational part of their stories and journeys. A memorial has been established in Steve’s name to benefit St. Jude’s or the Campbell County Animal Shelter.
