Steven Anthony Layman

November 16, 1956 — June 18, 2025

Gillette

Steven Anthony Layman, 68, of Gillette, Wyoming sadly passed away June 18, 2025 when he was hit by an automobile while riding his motorcycle in southeastern Campbell County, Wyoming. Steve was born November 16, 1956 in Manistee, Michigan to Lewis Lee and Dorothy Hattie (Hutson) Layman. He was raised in Utica, Michigan, graduating from Utica High School with the class of 1974. He attended Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan.

Steve traveled west to Gillette in 1975, joining his brother, Fred, in search of work. Not long after arriving in Gillette, he met his future wife, Mary Barlow, while she was working at her mother’s Coast-to-Coast Hardware store. Steve and Mary were married June 11, 1978 and recently celebrated 47 wonderful years together.

Steve was the proud father of Cole A. Layman, born in 1983 and Aaron D. Layman, born in 1986. He taught his and Mary’s sons to enjoy many activities (primarily in the great outdoors), to pursue their individual dreams and goals, the value of hard work, and, most importantly, to be good men.

In 1977, Steve began a 37-year long career with Amax Coal Company. After retiring from the coal company, he worked for the City of Gillette Parks Department, managing Dalbey Park and the Gillette Fishing Lake and preparing the Gillette Little League fields before games. For nearly seven years, he took great pride in improving and maintaining the park, alongside his crew, for everyone to enjoy.

Steve was involved in many activities throughout his life, always striving to improve his skills with each activity. He played soccer throughout his childhood, high school, and into college. In Gillette, he joined the Sagemen soccer team and coached the Pronghorns youth soccer team. Steve also enjoyed coaching his sons’ Little League teams. He had many hobbies, including softball, racquetball, hunting, fishing, running, biking, hiking in the mountains, pickleball, wood carving, and guitar picking.

Steve loved people; it was very important to him to keep friendships alive, rekindle old friendships, and make new friends. He loved telling stories and inserting a little humor to make people laugh or smile. As a Christian, Steve valued the fellowship and knowledge he gained from his involvement with various bible study groups.

Steve is survived by his wife, Mary Layman, his sons, Cole and Aaron Layman; his daughter-in-law, Cindy (Nicolia) Layman (Aaron’s wife); his sister, Margaret DeTroyer; his brother, Richard Layman; many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Dorothy Layman; his sister, Barbara Axsom; his brothers, George, Fred, and Michael Layman; his cousin, Bill Kinney; many aunts, uncles, and nephews.

A memorial service to honor Steve’s life will be held at Family Life Church in Gillette on July 23, 2025 at 2:00 in the afternoon.
