Robert Wayne Davis

Memorial Service for Wayne Davis will be held Saturday, September 20, 2025 at 2:00 p.m., at High Plains Community Church with Pastor Marty Crump officiating. Wayne Davis passed away Friday, September 5, 2025 at Primrose Retirement Community. Born as Robert Wayne Davis on January 5, 1933, as the youngest son to Clifford H. and Elma M. (Knoy) Davis. Wayne and his siblings, Norma and Richard, spent their youth on the family ranch on Elk Creek Road, fifty miles north of Gillette.

Wayne attended Campbell County High School and graduated in May of 1951, following a State football championship. During his years in High School, Wayne met the love of his life, Sallie Saunders. After High School, Wayne attended Chadron State College on a football scholarship. College was interrupted when his draft number came up and he joined the Army. Before leaving for basic training, he convinced Sallie to get married and they wed a week later on December 27, 1952. He then shipped out and spent the majority of his service in Germany during the Korean Conflict, returning home in February 1955.

Wayne and his growing family lived on the family ranch north of Gillette until September 1976 when they moved to town to join the family car business, D & I Motors, which was renamed to Davis Chevrolet a few years later. Wayne became the dealer when his father died and grew the company to one of the top in the state.

He was always involved with Boards and organizations that worked to improve the community. He served multiple terms as a County Commissioner when the county had no money. He served multiple terms on the School Board during the boom years, helping build most of the schools that are in use today, including CCHS. He was on the Chamber of Commerce Board, and the Rotary Club Board. It was during this time that he met hundreds of fellow citizens and created lifelong friendships.

He was a Master Mason, Shriner and Jester, and was the liaison for any child that needed special care at any Shriners Hospital.

He is survived by daughter Carol (Paul) Legerski of Rock Springs, Bob (Jenny), Mike (Karen) and Chuck (Laurie)Davis all of Gillette. He had 9 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 70 years, Sallie, parents, sister Norma and brother Richard.
