Private interment for Michael McKown, 72, of Hot Springs, South Dakota will be in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery.  Michael passed away after a short battle with cancer on Wednesday, April 19, 2023 at the Hospice House of the Hills in Rapid City, South Dakota.

 

Michael Alan McKown was born in Miller, South Dakota on July 6, 1950 the son of Roy and Ardith (Moon) McKown.  He was raised in Edgemont, South Dakota.  As a boy, he encountered adversity young; Michael had a strong will to live and survived a brain tumor in 1963. He attended school in Edgemont and  graduated Edgemont High School in 1969.

 

Upon graduation he joined his family's business as a second generation printer at the Edgemont Herald Tribune. Michael saw this business through until its sale in the mid-80s.  After leaving Edgemont, Mike continued to work in the printing business throughout the hills, finishing at Custer Business Enterprises until his retirement in 2013.

 

Michael enjoyed football and baseball.  Like his father, he was a Cardinals fan and the Bronco's were his favorite football team.  He followed the Twins and Vikings as well, being they were what was broadcast locally.  Michael was easy going and never met a stranger.  He will be remembered most for his kindness shown to those around him and his gentle demeanor.

 

He is survived by his sisters: Barbara (Randy) Barkley of Riverside, Calif. and Judy (Art) Licht of Gillette, Wyo.; sister-in-law JoAnn McKown, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

 

Michael is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Marlin McKown and sister, Ellen Haefner
