Marion Harold Scott

Nov 27, 1932 — Sep 23, 2026

Marion Harold Scott passed away peacefully at age 93 with family by his side, on Wednesday, September 23, 2026. Marion was born on November 27, 1932, to Harold and Bertha Jane (Anderson) Scott in Gillette, Wyoming. He was raised on the ranch that was homesteaded by his grandparents in 1917, with his brothers Bill, Jim, and Doug, and sister, Kay. As the oldest of five children, Marion was fondly remembered for his protective and loving nature. The Scott children attended the Lonetree School where they rode their horses to school each day. Marion graduated from Campbell County High School in 1951, and on January 31, 1953, Marion married the love of his life, Mary McClure. Their first home was a one room cabin with dirt floors, no electricity or plumbing. They worked to build their future there and together they raised four daughters, Marilyn, Debbie, Cathy, and Cindy on the Scott family ranch. As a youth, Marion was involved in 4-H and took a variety of livestock projects including the very first horse project in Campbell County with his horse ‘Brownie’. He continued his support of 4-H with over 25 years as a 4-H leader and supporting his daughters and grandchildren through 4-H and rodeo. Marion was drafted into the Army at the start of the Korean war and was allowed to continue helping his father on the ranch by serving his duty in the Army National Guard. Marion spent most of his life horseback working side by side with his father to operate and grow the ranch, and as their family grew, Marion and Mary purchased the Ray Gilstrap place adjoining the original Scott Ranch to establish their own home and P Cross Bar Ranch. During those years, Marion mentored many young men and instilled a foundation of hard work, and an appreciation for caring for the land and for their livestock. His influence had a lasting impact on their lives. Marion and his dad started an outfitting business together in the 1960s. This was where he found his passion. He went on many, many hunting trips that took him from the Yukon to Mexico and completed his Grand Slam in 2004. One of his last hunts was hunting Muskox in the Yukon. Marion, alongside his wife, continued to operate P Cross Bar Trophy Hunts for over 60 years, guiding hunters for mule deer, antelope, elk, and buffalo. Marion lived and worked on the ranch in northern Campbell County until the age of 89. He dedicated his entire life to preserving the family ranch for generations to come and instilled the humble values of hard work and maintaining the western lifestyle carried on through his daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. One of his greatest honors was being inducted into the Wyoming Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2023. He shares this honor with his dad and his brother Bill. Marion was a lifetime member of Safari Club International where he served as Chapter President, Director at Large and was awarded Guide of the Year, Outfitter of the Year, North American Professional Hunter of the Year, and was honored with the coveted CJ McElrory Leadership Award. He was an active member of the Wyoming Outfitters and Guides Association for over 40 years where he served as Secretary/Treasurer, Vice President, and President, and was recognized for his contributions to the association as an Honorary Lifetime Member in 2018. Marion served on Mountain West Farm Bureau Board of Directors, was an active member of Wyoming Stock Growers Association and testified before the Wyoming legislature and in Washington, DC on agriculture issues. Marion was also a member of Campbell County Farm Bureau, Grand Slam/OVIS, Boone and Crockett, Family Life Church, and was a lifetime member of the NRA. Marion spent his final years in Primrose Retirement Community in Gillette, Wyoming where he made many friends and enjoyed happy hour and playing poker. He will be remembered for his fierce sense of humor, and his love of cattle, horses, fishing, hunting, and living the western lifestyle. He was a true cowboy.
