Janet Louise Thompson, born on February 10, 1954, in Worland, Wyoming, passed away peacefully at her home in Gillette, Wyoming, on what would have been her 70th birthday, February 10, 2026. She is remembered as a devoted family member, an enthusiastic gardener, and a passionate chairperson and member of the Master Gardeners, as well as an Arborist for the University of Wyoming Extension Office.
As the fifth of seven siblings, Janet cherished her family deeply. She is preceded in death by her parents, Golden and Faye Averett, and is survived by her beloved husband, Thomas Thompson, whom she married on April 25, 1975, in Butte, Montana. Together, they raised three devoted children: Richard Thompson, Jaclyn Mehrer, and Stephanie Thompson. Janet was also the proud grandmother of seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild, Alani Williams, who brought immense joy to her life.
Janet's educational journey took her through Plevna High School in eastern Montana, where she developed a love for learning that she carried into her career. Known for her green thumb, she dedicated countless hours to gardening, which was not only a hobby but a way for her to connect with nature and share beauty with those around her. Janet often spent her free time camping and kayaking, embracing the outdoors with an enthusiasm that inspired others.
Throughout her life, Janet was a committed member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where she found a strong sense of community and purpose. Her contributions as a chairperson of the Master Gardeners reflect her dedication to both her work and her commitment to enriching the lives of others through education and horticulture.
Her legacy will be honored with visitation on February 12, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Gillette Memorial Chapel located at 210 West Fifth St, Gillette, WY 82716. Following this, a graveside service will take place at Mount Pisgah Cemetery, 804 S Emerson Ave, Gillette, WY 82716, on February 13, 2026, at 10:00 AM.
Janet Louise Thompson leaves behind a lasting impact through her family, her work in her community, and her love for the natural world. Her spirit will continue to bloom in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
