Dr. Guy Montgomery JR “Doc” rest easy Dad. 1939-2026
There are so many stories to tell, so many things to mention when trying to write a proper obituary for a man who lived 86 long eventful years. Our daddy, father, dad, dude, doc, Monty, daddy guy, was a wonderful person. To us he was a giant with powerful healing hands. He taught us to work hard and play hard and so much more. Our dad welcomed, loved, and healed. We want to celebrate him and a life well lived, as he would have wanted- a kind of life that happened quietly and on his own terms.
He was larger than life- the smartest man in the room with a style and a booming voice to match his stature. His smile lit up a room-infectious, warm, full of mischief and joy. I feel certain God called him home not just to reunite him with loved ones who had passed, but to see his smile in person. A smile that reassured his patients and made known the love he felt for his children.
This is no meager life we reflect on today. This is a life as full as any man can live. He spent his career caring for people in their most difficult moments, while raising six children-one boy and five girls. An interesting life indeed.
A word not often used describes him well: grand. Our dad was a grand man. An Iowa boy transplanted to his dream of Wyoming with his wife and brood. He loved Wyoming. Once here, he never left. He embraced this place as his own. He fit without question--strong, tough, independent, caring, and compassionate. These words only scratch the surface because words don’t fully describe a man who truly embodied them.
He was born on July 20, 1939, as Lucy and Guy Sr.’s second child in Washington, Iowa. He was 8 years younger than his sister Joyce. He was adored by his grandma, Mrs. Hunting, and smothered by his parents. After high school, he went to undergraduate at the State University in Iowa from 1957-1961, then medical school in South Dakota1961-1963 graduating in 1963. In 1964, he met Kathleen Kay Klink. He knew she was right for him and swept her off her feet before she had a chance to think. A whirlwind romance of 3 months, the justice of the peace back dated their marriage certificate by a month just in case. They had their first child in 1965 embarking on a life filled with children and adventure.
He lived and practiced medicine in Washington, Iowa, Denver, CO, Kerington, ND, Jamestown, ND, Park Rapids, Minn, Dickinson, ND, and Beach, ND, from 1965 to 1979. He raced snowmobiles during this time as well. In 1979, Guy moved to Casper, WY and started his career in Emergency Room Medicine. In 1986, he relocated his family to Gillette, WY and worked in the ER at CCMH. In 1995, he and his wife moved to Powell, WY where he continued to work in the ER until his retirement in 2007. He retired to Pine Haven, WY and spent winters in Casa Grande, Arizona until 2018. He and Kay eventually moved back to Gillette in 2021.
Independent of spirit and quick of wit, he forged a path forward for himself and his family, to whom he was devoted. Devoted to his wife of almost 60 years. Their love story was told repeatedly until it was engraved on his children’s hearts. A story that compelled them to create their own great love stories. It was a lesson and a legacy of great depth and meaning and life affirming.
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, taught us to chase our dreams and live our lives as we see fit-just as he did. Thank you for those gifts-the lessons and the love. Rest easy now, Dad. Smile at your wife. Smile at your God. We will always hold you in our hearts.
We loved you from the moment we laid eyes on you and will love you for the rest of our lives.
His children: TJ (Debbie) Montgomery of Colorado, Kris (Tom Rojas) Montgomery of Virginia, Dodie (David Hargis) Montgomery of New Mexico, Janet (Jasper Warembourg) Montgomery of Wyoming, Robbie (Roy) Holdeman of Wyoming, Diane (Don) Ault of Wyoming. His grandchildren: Joseph Montgomery Ault, Marlee Montgomery Holdeman, Sawyer Holdeman, Jorja Warembourg, Logan Montgomery, Jillian Warembourg, and Luke Montgomery. His nephews: Kevan (Robin) Rusk and Kelley Rusk of North Dakota.
Condolences can be sent to 4405 Westover Rd Gillette, WY 82718. He gave faithfully to Tunnel to Towers, Shriners Hospital, St. Jude, Wounded Warrior, and Doctors without Borders. Making a gift in his name would honor him well. A memorial will be held later to inter him with his wife at Mt. Pisgah in Gillette, Wy.
