Ellen Louise Gray, 75, of Rozet, Wyoming, passed away July 17, 2026, after a long struggle with pulmonary fibrosis.
Ellen was born Jan. 2, 1951, in Sheridan, Wyoming, to Alvin and Charleen (Felde) Gray. She was the oldest of four children, including her sister, Wanda, and brothers, David and Carl. The family later returned to the Gray family homestead near Rozet, and Ellen graduated from Moorcroft High School in 1969.
During her school years, Ellen played clarinet, participated in 4-H and developed her lifelong love of horses.
Ellen met Carroll L. Gray of Piggott, Arkansas — no relation, as far as the family knows! — in July 1970, one week after Moorcroft’s Jubilee Days. It was Carroll’s first night in Moorcroft after being stationed there as an airman first class in the U.S. Air Force. They married just six weeks later, on Sept. 19, 1970, beginning a marriage that lasted nearly 56 years.
Ellen and Carroll lived near several Air Force radar sites across the country before settling in Missouri, where they had three daughters: Carrie, Kristy, and Patsy. The family returned to the Wyoming ranch in 1979.
Over the years, Ellen and Carroll enjoyed square dancing, picnics at Devils Tower, camping, horseback riding, raising Spanish mustangs and preparing grand meals for their children and grandchildren. Ellen became a gifted quilter, creating multiple quilts for her daughters and grandkids.
Ellen is survived by her husband, Carroll; daughters Carrie (Mark) Rogaczewski, Kristy (Dustin) Bleizeffer, and Patsy Gray (Matt); grandchildren Scott (Katie), Katelin, Samantha, Taylor, Samuel, Lane (Makenna), Trevor, and Grady; and great-grandkids River and Ryatt.
She is also survived by her siblings, Wanda Gray, David (Marti) Gray, and Carl (Nancy) Gray along with numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Ellen’s family is grateful to the organ donor who provided his lung in 2019 and the UC Health transplant team that gave her many more years with her loving family. Memorial donations may be made to Donor Alliance, or consider becoming an organ donor.
A viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, July 24, at Gillette Memorial Chapel 210 W. Fifth St. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m., with a lunch reception afterward at Ruff’s Bar in Rozet, WY. Memorials and condolences may be sent in care of Gillette Memorial Chapel 210 West 5th Street, Gillette, WY 82716.
