In Loving Memory of Derek Matthew Schaff
March 19, 1983 – 2026

Derek Matthew Schaff, age 43, of Gillette, Wyoming, was born on March 19, 1983, to Donald and Cheryle Schaff. Derek went missing in June 2026, in the wide-open spaces of Weston Hills, Wyoming, a place he loved and where he found peace in the beauty and freedom of the outdoors. After months of searching, Derek was found on September 19, 2026. Though his life ended far too soon, he leaves behind a lifetime of memories, a family who loved him dearly, and a place in the hearts of those who knew him that can never be filled.

The youngest of four children, Derek was raised in Wyoming, where he developed a love for the outdoors, a strong work ethic, and an independent spirit that stayed with him throughout his life. Wyoming was more than just the place Derek called home. Its wide-open spaces, rugged mountains, and quiet wilderness were a part of who he was and where he found his greatest peace.

During his school years, Derek enjoyed playing basketball, where he developed friendships and made memories that would stay with him throughout his life. He carried that same determination and competitive spirit into everything he set his mind to.

Following graduation, Derek pursued a career in welding and fabrication, a trade he took great pride in. A talented craftsman who was skilled with his hands, Derek believed in working hard and doing a job well. His career took him across the country, giving him the opportunity to experience new places, meet new people, and build a life through dedication and determination. No matter where his work took him, his Wyoming roots were always a part of him.

When Derek wasn't working, he was happiest outdoors. An avid hunter, fisherman, and hiker, he had a deep appreciation for the beauty and freedom of nature. Whether he was casting a fishing line, walking through the mountains, or simply enjoying the peacefulness of the wilderness, Derek found happiness in life's simpler moments. The outdoors wasn't just something he enjoyed; it was a part of who he was.

Derek was a hardworking, independent, and strong-willed man who lived life in his own way. He wasn't always a man of many words, but those closest to him knew the heart behind his quiet nature. He valued his independence, took pride in his work, and cared deeply for the people he loved.

As the youngest of four siblings, Derek shared a lifetime of memories with his brother and sisters. From childhood adventures to the experiences that shaped their adult lives, the bond of family remained a part of his story. Derek was also a father who worked hard to provide for his children. The love, memories, and connections he leaves behind will forever be cherished by his family.

Derek was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Donald and Cheryle Schaff; his maternal grandparents, Virgil and Fern Koenig; and his paternal grandparents, Lenus and Magdalena Schaff. His family finds comfort in believing he is now peacefully reunited with those who went before him.

He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Dominic and Melissa Schaff and family; his sister and brother-in-law, Darielle and Steve Raney, and nephew Garrett Steele; his sister and brother-in-law, Danielle and Beau Jackson, and nephew Ryder Jackson; and his significant other, Raquel Costillo.

Derek also leaves behind his beloved children, along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.

Derek's life was one of hard work, adventure, independence, and a deep love for the land he called home. He will be remembered for the things he built with his hands, the places he explored, the memories he made, and the lasting place he holds in the hearts of those who loved him.

There is something especially meaningful in knowing that Derek's final days were spent surrounded by the wide-open spaces and natural beauty he loved so deeply. Weston Hills will forever hold a special place in the hearts of his family, a place where the beauty of the Wyoming landscape will always remind them of him.

Though his time here ended far too soon, Derek's memory will live on in the mountains he loved, the waters he fished, the endless Wyoming skies, and the stories his family and friends will continue to share.

Derek, your journey through this life may have ended, but the love we have for you never will. May you find eternal peace among the mountains, beneath the open skies, and in the beauty of the wilderness you loved so much.

Forever loved. Forever missed. Never forgotten.
