Clara Wynell Merchen

Clara “Wynell” Merchen, beloved mother, sister, and friend, passed away on July 22, 2026, at Legacy Living and Rehabilitation Center. She was born on February 11, 1940, in Haines City, Florida, to Paul and Ora Mae Stewart.

Wynell’s life reflected resilience, kindness, and a deep devotion to family.

Wynell grew up in a loving home on the Oregon coast, guided by her mother, Ora Mae Stewart, whose values shaped her life. She shared close bonds with her siblings and treasured their companionship. Although she mourned the loss of her sister, Jimmy Fae Turner, Clara remained close to her surviving sisters, Betty Jean Mason and Jean Stewart, who continue to honor her memory.

In adulthood, Wynell built a loving life with her late husband, Archie Merchen. Together, they raised a family rooted in lasting support and affection. Her devotion as a mother was central to her life, and she took great pride in her children. She is lovingly remembered by her sons, Jack, Larry, Tony, Joe, and Curtis Merchen; her daughters, Carrie Spaur and Julie Adair; and the memory of her daughter, Debra Lee Zeleny, who preceded her in death.

Wynell shared her love and care with everyone around her. Whether offering a listening ear or steady support, she made others feel valued and seen. Her warmth, gentle humor, and compassion drew people close. Her legacy lives on through the love of her children, 22 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and her sisters, who hold her memory dear.

Though Wynell’s time with us has ended, the memories she created through laughter, stories, and steadfast love remain. Each cherished memory reflects a life well lived and a love that will not fade. Her spirit continues to inspire all who knew her. A private cremation service will be held, and Wynell will later be laid to rest with her husband at Black Hills National Cemetery.
