Christopher Carroll Rigsby passed away surrounded by family on February 28, 2026 at the Banner Wyoming Medical Center in Casper. He was born August 30, 1952 in Sherman, TX to Henry and Sara (Schei) Rigsby. He was the oldest of 5 children: David, Louise, Doug, and Curtiss.
His family moved to Torrington, WY where he attended grade school. Chris would often remind his kids of his time serving as captain of the crossing guards. It wasn’t long before his family moved to Riverton, WY where he attended junior high and high school. In high school (and even into college) he joined Speech and Debate. His family confirms that he is truly an expert debater! His wife claims that she has never won an argument, but we know he always had a weakness for his “darling.” After graduating high school in 1970, he attended Central Wyoming College where he was more focused on extracurricular activities like ping pong, pool, and poker rather than his studies.
Chris met Suzann Maughan at Taco John’s the summer of 1970 in Riverton. They got married two years later in July 1972. Together they raised 4 sons: Christopher (Lynette), Mark, Paul (Lora), and Jeff (Jessie). Chris worked at Gilpatrick Construction as a mechanic and then for the Gas Hills uranium mines until the uranium industry mines closed. The family moved to Alaska in 1983, where Chris was superintendent at a gold mine north of Fairbanks. When the price of gold dropped, the mine closed and the Rigsbys were on the move again. They loaded everything they owned onto a homemade flatbed trailer and headed down the Alcan Highway to Gillette, WY in 1984. Chris thrived working in the coal industry for the next 30 years in the place they still call “home.”
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and held various callings. His family was sealed in the Logan Utah Temple in 1987.
Chris was an outdoor enthusiast that took his family on all the outdoor adventures you can imagine! Summers were spent fishing on the lake or camping in the mountains while the Wyoming winters were explored on the back of a snowmobile.
He was preceded in death by his parents (Sara and Henry), sister (Louise), and sons (Mark and Jeff).
He is survived by his wife Suzann, sons Christopher (Lynette) and Paul (Lora), and 8 grandchildren (Alexa, Christopher, Halley, Natalie, Summer, Andrew, Aria, and Grady).
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Campbell County Humane Society or the Rock Pile Soup Kitchen.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, March 9, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1500 O’Hara Drive in Gillette. Visitation at 10:00 AM, Memorial Service at 11:00 AM, and Burial at Mount Pisgah Cemetery to follow.
