James Mankin

Funeral services for Dick Mankin, 78, of Gillette will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at New Life Wesleyan Church, with Kenna Lou Rose officiating. Burial to follow at Mount Pisgah Cemetery.Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home. Mr. Mankin died Thursday, April 13, 2006 at Campbell County Memorial Hospital of cancer.He was born August 22, 1927 to Charles Ashford and Teresa Mildred (Oxford) Mankin in Gillette, Wyoming. His elementary school years were at the New Hope School, and Bundy School, in rural Campbell County. He graduated from Campbell County High School in May, 1945. On April 9, 1946, he married Ruth Ridenour, and they lived south of Gillette on the Mankin Ranch.Dick was involved in the rodeo circuit for 25 years, in the calf / team roping events, and found the time to play trumpet in local bands for over 18 years. Among many of his interests, he enjoyed bowling and trapshooting, winning many local and state titles along the way. He is a lifetime member of the Amateur Trapshooting Association, past president of the Gillette Gun Club and Gillette Men?s Bowling Association. For over 50 years, Dick guided many deer and antelope hunts. His proudest achievement was being an Official Measurer for the Boone and Crockett Club, and the Pope and Young Club, since 1957. Other interests include horseshoe pitching, artifact hunting, farming and ranching.Mr. Mankin is survived by his wife of 60 years; four sons, John of Athens, TN; Jerry, Gene and Jim of Gillette; one daughter, Jannelle Mankin-Mills of Gillette; one sister, Alice Lee Christensen of Gillette; one brother, Charles D. of Gillette; ten grandchildren; two great grand-children, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
