Funeral service for Larry ?Joe? Williams will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 6, 2007 at Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Chris Carr of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Gillette- Mt. Pisgah Cemetery with military honors provided by American Legion Post #42. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m., Thursday, July 5, 2007 at Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home.Joe Williams, age 58, of Houston, Texas formerly of Gillette died at his home on June 30, 2007.Mr. Williams was born on May 22, 1949 in Gillette, Wyoming the son of Leon and Helen (Schneider) Williams. In high school, Joe was active in sports, participating in football and wrestling. He graduated from Campbell County High School with the class of 1967 and was looking forward to his 40th class reunion later this month. After graduation he joined the United States Navy in 1968 serving until 1974. While in the Navy he served in the nuclear program leaving as a MM1. Joe was home-ported out of Honolulu, Hawaii and was stationed aboard the submarine U.S.S. Daniel Webster. After his honorable discharge, he went to work for AMAX Coal at the Belle Ayr Mine, later transferring to the Eagle Butte Mine, in its very early phases. Joe left the mine, moving to Hawaii, eventually returning to California, where he enrolled in college. After a stint in junior college, he enrolled at ?Cal Poly?, in San Luis Obispo, California receiving a BS in Metallurgical Engineering and later a MS, also in Metallurgical Engineering. He started his engineering career at Garrett Aviation in Phoenix, Arizona. He left Garrett and went to work for FMC in Minneapolis, Minnesota, later transferring to a Houston division, SOFEC. Joe was working there at the time of his death. Joe is survived by his mother, Helen Williams of Gillette, Wyoming; brother, Jim Williams of Gillette, Wyoming; sister Donna Findlay of Whidbey Island, Washington; daughter, Shannon; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and numerous cousins.He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.A memorial has been established in Joe?s name to benefit the Cal Poly University in California.
